Symptoms of a Gallbladder Issue

Your gallbladder is probably something you have likely never thought about, but this small organ can trigger big problems.Your gallbladder is a four-inch, pear-shaped organ that is located under your liver in the upper-right section of your abdomen.

The gallbladder stores bile, a combination of fluids, fat, and cholesterol. Small amounts of bile are released into the small intestine after eating to aid in the digestion of fats. This process allows fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients to be more easily absorbed into the bloodstream. While the gallbladder does serve a purpose, it isn’t essential. The gallbladder can also become the source of painful and troublesome symptoms should it become inflamed or develop gallstones.

Learn the signs and symptoms of gallbladder trouble, and when it’s time to seek the advice of professionals.

Signs of a Gallbladder Problem
  • Pain that occurs in the upper-right of your abdomen or pain that radiates to other areas of the body (back and chest)
  • Digestive problems including nausea, vomiting, acid reflux and gas are common symptoms
  • Chronic diarrhea or more than four bowel movements per day for at least three months
  • Yellow-tinted skin, or jaundice, may be a sign of a block or stone in the common bile duct
  • Lighter-colored stools and dark urine are possible signs of a common bile duct block
Gallbladder Removal
You may need gallbladder surgery if you have pain or other symptoms caused by gallstones — small stones that can form in the gallbladder. They can block the flow of bile and irritate the gallbladder. When a gallbladder issue is both painful and persistent, removing the gallbladder through surgery called a cholecystectomy is the recommended treatment. If the gallbladder is removed, then the liver and the biliary system will take over its role.
