Vascular Surgery

For Residents of Buffalo, Amherst, Tonawanda & Williamsville, NY

Your vascular system is extremely important to maintain proper bodily functions, as it serves to carry blood throughout your body. Vascular surgery serves to rid your body of diseases in the vascular system, including the arteries and veins. Many times vascular surgery is not required and conditions can be treated with medication, a healthy diet, and exercise. However, some more serious vascular conditions may require surgery.

Vascular surgeons are able to perform any kind of procedure a patient needs to care for their vascular disease. However, conditions involving the heart or brain must be treated by a cardiologist or neurologist rather than by standard vascular surgery.

Vascular Diseases that May Require Surgery

  • Stroke
  • Blood Clots
  • Aneurysm (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, etc.)
  • Raynaud's Disease
  • Peripheral Artery Disease
  • Lymphedema
  • Critical Limb Ischemia
These are just a few of the many diseases that can potentially lead to the need for vascular surgery.

Different Types of Vascular Surgeries Offered

  • Endovascular Surgery:  Used to treat diseases affecting the blood vessels. The procedure includes making an incision by the hip and a graft is inserted to seal an aneurysm. This procedure is less invasive than open surgery.
  • Open Vascular Surgery:  A more invasive surgery where a large incision is made with a scalpel. This surgery can be used to repair abdominal aortic aneurysms. While minimally invasive surgery is the optimal option, sometimes open surgery is necessary to make effective repairs.
  • Peripheral Artery Bypass: Serves to reroute blood due to a blockage in the artery. A graft is put into the artery to open the blockage.

Possible Risks Involved with Vascular Surgery

Like any other surgery, vascular surgery can come with risks and complications. Below are some possible risks after surgery:
  • Infection
  • Fluid Leak
  • Bleeding
  • Failed Grafts
  • Leg Swelling (Peripheral Artery Bypass)
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke

The Recovery Process

When it comes to more minimally invasive surgeries including endovascular surgery, you can usually leave the hospital between 1 and 2 days after surgery. You will be able to resume normal daily activities in about 4 weeks. After peripheral artery bypass surgery, you usually will need to stay in the hospital between 4 and 7 days. It can take between 6 and 12 weeks to fully recover and be back to your normal self. You will also not be able to drive for 4 to 6 weeks. Open vascular surgeries will also require a more extensive recovery period.
